The riots that we witnessed throughout London and in other parts of the country shocked all of us as we never expected to see such madness in our city. The wanton mindless destruction has laid bare the anger/boredom/ hopelessness/lack of education/disconnection from society that burn within our young people. On the first prayer meeting after the riots we had a half night of prayer focusing on these issues. As a church we are committed to being part of a change in society that brings positive transformation to our communities. We can no longer leave the public sphere to the government but it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to be the change that is so desperately needed.. One of the reasons seems to be an absolute lack of any moral framework. Young people felt they could go and steal something simply because everyone else was doing it and they could get away with it. There was no inner voice telling them that what they were doing was wrong.
If you are a parent, I hope you have been able to fill in the Education Forum Parents Questionnaire. It is our desire to serve you as parents as you seek to bring your children up in a godly way in a society that no longer has a concept of God or even truth. We want to hear your views on mentoring, schooling (including free schools and home schooling), Christian assemblies, study skills etc. Please pick up the one page questionnaire from reception. We will use this to see what workshops are needed for parents and/or for pupils, whether there is a need for articles and information sheets on home schooling, whether we can offer a Christian theme slot at your child’s assembly, support for those with learning difficulties, input in how we move forward with a free school etc. We have a number of ideas of what we would like to offer in regards to support to you but we want to know whether these will address the needs you have.
We will soon be making available information packs on how you can get involved in politics. We want to offer simple advice that anyone can follow with lots of suggestions on where to go to get further more indepth input from a Christian perspective. The work that Christian organisations like CARE do is fantastic and we want to make sure that we as a church are active in this area.
There is so much confusion today about different medical treatments. There was a time when your GP or hospital would offer advice or a drug treatment for your condition. Now it is much more complicated. There are a range of treatments now available which are known collectively as ‘complementary’ and ‘alternative’ medicines. These treatments are not generally considered part of conventional medicines, many do not have a scientific basis and the reasons they work are unknown. It is important to understand what we are being offered and whether any of them have a spiritual background which should concern us. We will soon be making available a pack to give you some of this background information.
We would love to have your input on any of the Giants if you work with, are interested in or study in that sector. If you want to be part of any of the forums or just want to find out more about what happens then please contact Peter Mcilvenna on 020 8799 6109 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
